Israeli Airstrike Kills Five Al Jazeera Staff in Gaza

Anas Al Sharif, a 28-year-old journalist for Al Jazeera, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Sunday, along with four of his colleagues and an assistant. Two other people also died. The strike hit a tent near Shifa Hospital.

Israel’s army said Al Sharif led a Hamas group and helped launch rockets at Israel, showing what it claimed were documents as proof. Al Jazeera and press freedom groups rejected these claims, saying Israel had no real evidence. A UN expert had also warned earlier that Al Sharif’s life was in danger and said the accusations were unproven.

Al Jazeera called him “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists” and said the attack was meant to silence reporters before a possible Israeli offensive. Al Sharif had worked with Reuters on award-winning war coverage and had over 500,000 followers on X. Just minutes before his death, he posted that Gaza City was under heavy bombardment.

The other journalists killed were Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal. Gaza’s media office says 237 journalists have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023; the Committee to Protect Journalists counts at least 186. Hamas said the killings may mean Israel is about to launch a major new attack.
